Will this suit a smooth idler position?
This is a grooved pulley for the ribbed side of the belt. For the back of the belt use a smooth idler.

Do I need a new belt?
Not usually, but if the old belt is glazed or cracked it's cheap insurance to fit a new one.

Give the old pulley a spin by hand before you rip it off. If it growls or wobbles, it's cactus and this'll sort it.
