The 1KD is well known for pushing oil mist through the intake. That oil coats the MAP sensor, the sensor reads wrong, and you end up with poor running, black smoke or a limp mode that has people chasing far more expensive faults. The separator filter is a cheap consumable that stops it happening.

Worth replacing whenever you're doing an intake clean, rather than waiting for a problem.
